The Island · Underwater & On Foot
Clear, warm water and living reefs make St. John one of the Caribbean's great snorkeling islands — and its shaded trails lead to ruins, petroglyphs, and cliff-top views. Here's where to start.
Below the surface
A tiny cay ringed by vibrant reef — turtles, rays, starfish, and reef fish in every direction. Reached by a flat coastal walk from Leinster Bay. Strong swimmers only around the far side.
The famous self-guided underwater snorkeling trail, with plaques identifying coral and marine life just off the beach. Perfect for first-timers and kids.
Shallow, calm, and full of sea turtles grazing the turtle grass. Snorkel straight off the sand — one of the easiest and most rewarding spots on the island.
On foot
Beyond the beaches, Virgin Islands National Park is laced with trails through tropical forest to sugar-mill ruins, ancient petroglyphs, and dramatic overlooks. Bring water and good shoes — the reward is a quieter, wilder side of St. John.
Plan Your StayWalk the park
Descends through forest past ancient Taino petroglyphs and sugar-mill ruins to a remote south-shore beach. A ranger-led hike with a boat return is offered seasonally.
An easy walk from the town visitor center to Honeymoon and Salomon beaches, with an overlook across the harbor along the way.
From Salt Pond Bay out to a windswept cliff point at the island's southeast tip — cactus, sea views, and some of the best sunrises on St. John.
A short, shaded interpretive loop behind Cinnamon Bay through plantation ruins and tropical forest — easy and family-friendly.
A restored 18th-century sugar plantation with sweeping views over the BVI — self-guided paths and regular cultural demonstrations.
The flat shoreline path to Waterlemon Cay — an easy stroll with water views the whole way, doubling as the snorkel approach.
Good to know: Wear reef-safe sunscreen, bring your own snorkel gear (we can point you to rentals), and never touch the coral or turtles. Currents pick up around points and cays — check conditions and stay within your comfort. Our concierge can help match spots to the day's weather.
